YNAB Has a Calculator

The first time I saw the label “nYNAB” online, I had no idea what it meant. My brain computed the letters, typed in all lowercase in a comment thread, and read them as “New York nab”. The topic was about personal finance so, when images of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York flashed in my mind, I was confused for a second.

I don’t want to further embarrass myself by admitting how recently I discovered the phrase “nYNAB”, but now I know what it means: New YNAB. As in, the YNAB of today. Not the YNAB that I first met in 2013, when I finally learned to love my budget.

And speaking of missing things, word on the street (or online) is that some of you are looking for the calculator function in YNAB (the current version—I’m not into that “n” prefix). Good news.

Your Budget Computes.

That’s right. In case you didn’t know, YNAB does inline calculations. They include:

• Addition
• Subtraction
• Division
• Multiplication
• Exponents

It works by typing your calculation directly into the cell on your budget screen, like this:

On a Mac

Click control + command + spacebar to open your emoji picker. Inside, you’ll find palm trees and all of the other emojis. More info imore.com.

On a PC

“Right-click on the taskbar and select ‘Toolbars’ and then ‘Touch Keyboard’. From here, you can access your emoji by clicking the smiley face on the touch keyboard.” More info (and photos) at howtogeek.com.

If these methods don’t work, try Googling “how to access emojis”, including the name of your operating system in your keyword search string.
